Santorini is a Greek island, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens, 150 km south of Mykonos, and 140 km north of Crete. Santorini has a population of 15,500 and a land area of 76 square miles. The length of the island is 16 km and its width varies from 1 to 5 km. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from one end of Santorini to the other (i.e. Oia to Akrotiri).
Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens. There are no direct flights to Santorini from the USA, Canada, or Australia. For awesome caldera and volcano views the best towns in Santorini are Oia, Fira, Imerovigli, and Firostefani.

Santorini in Mythology

According to an ancient Greek myth, Santorini was formed out of a miracle. The ancient Greeks had invented an imaginary story over the creation of Santorini island, a story that is connected to the Argonaut expedition.
They said that Jason and his fellow companions were on their way home, they landed on Anaphe, a small island of the Aegean Sea. There Euphemus saw a dream that he was making love to a nymph.
After making love, that woman told him that she got pregnant to his child and that her father would become angry if he knew that. That is why she needed a place to hide and give birth to her child.
She then told Euphemus to get a clod of earth from Anaphe and throw it into the sea. When Euphemus woke up, he decided to take the woman’s advice and when they sailed, he indeed threw a clod of earth onto the open sea. Suddenly, as a miracle, an island emerged to provide a safe place for the pregnant nymph.
Euphemus named this island either Calliste, which means the most beautiful, either Strogyli, due to its round shape. The son of Euphemus, who was born there, was named Theras and the island finally got his name, Thera.

Travel to Santorini by Sea

Not as fast as a flight, sea travelling can be more affordable and above all much more rewarding in views and experiences. The Blue Star Ferries slow boats (nine hours travel time) depart daily, all year round, from Piraeus Athens’ Port while the Hellenic Sea Ways High Speed ferries (five hours travel time) depart daily from April to October. Travel between the Islands
